Durham Miners’ Gala 2026: Where to Stay Nearby

Cozy Quarters manages serviced accommodation across County Durham and Teesside, including a property in Trimdon, a short drive from Durham city centre. This July, Durham hosts two of its biggest annual events back to back, the Durham Miners’ Gala on Saturday 11 July 2026, marking its 140th year, and the Durham Brass Festival running from 12 to 19 July 2026, celebrating two decades of music in the city.

The Durham Miners’ Gala has been held on the second Saturday of July since 1871, and it remains one of the largest trade union and community gatherings in Europe. Brass bands and banners march through the city to the racecourse, and past galas have drawn crowds well into six figures. If you are travelling in for the day, expect significant road closures in the city centre from early morning, so book parking or rail travel well ahead.

The following day, the Durham Brass Festival opens and runs for a full week. Some headline concerts, including performances at Durham Cathedral and Gala Durham, are ticketed, but a good portion of the programme is free. Little Brass Bashes bring community performances to villages including Quarrington Hill and Shildon on 13 July, and Barnard Castle and Crook on 14 July, so the festival spreads well beyond the city centre. The closing weekend, 18 and 19 July, brings Streets of Brass, with bands performing free pop up sets across Durham’s streets.

Is the Durham Brass Festival free to attend?

Much of the Durham Brass Festival is free, particularly the outdoor Streets of Brass performances on 18 and 19 July and several of the Little Brass Bashes in surrounding villages. Ticketed events, such as concerts at Durham Cathedral, are priced separately and tend to sell out, so book those in advance.

For anyone staying over for either event, a base just outside the city centre is often the more comfortable option. Our Trimdon apartment puts guests within easy reach of Durham itself and several of the brass festival’s village venues, without the parking pressure of staying right in the centre on Gala day.

A few practical pointers for visiting:

  • Book parking or train tickets early, Durham fills up fast on Gala weekend

  • Check which Brass Festival events are free and which need tickets before you travel

  • If staying nearby rather than in the centre, a car gives you the flexibility to reach both the city and the village events

Booking directly through cozyquarters.co.uk rather than a third party platform typically saves 10 to 20 percent compared with the same stay booked through an OTA, and you will be speaking directly with the team that manages the property.

Whether you are marching with the banners or following the brass bands from village to village, County Durham has a busy few weeks ahead. Browse availability and book directly at cozyquarters.co.uk for a comfortable, well placed stay for either event.
